At Making Math Minds, we foster a deeper understanding of math concepts using real world context and connections. In keeping with our philosophy of “involve me and I understand,” we provide instruction using a student-centered, active, inquiry- and project-based learning approach that teaches children important questioning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills while addressing the Standards for Mathematical Practice in the Common Core. Math Tutoring: Tutoring offers personalized learning around your son or daughter’s needs. Small groups of students work collaboratively to learn the how, when and why behind their math work. Tutoring sessions can be connected to the math lessons taking place in your child’s classroom, or an independent program designed to bolster long term success.
Professional Development Programs: For schools seeking engaging, practical 21st Century Skills, Real Life Connections and Common Core Standards professional development programs, Making Math Minds develops specialized Project Based Learning trainings for teachers in grades 1 through 8.
About
For more than 20 years, Cara Littlefield has worked as a teacher, curriculum specialist and education consultant in both public and charter schools.
While teaching at the world-renowned High Tech High charter system in San Diego, Cara was recruited by Innovation Unit to relocate to England and work with them to bring advanced teaching methods to schools throughout the United Kingdom, and to develop curriculum for schools in Africa. She has also provided Project Based Learning coaching to teachers in Australia, Sierra Leon, England and California and coordinated math syllabi and pacing guides for school districts across Southern California.
With an undergraduate degree in Elementary Math Education from the University of Dayton, a Masters Degree in Math, Science and Technology from Cal State University – San Marcos, and the benefit of decades of collaboration with innovative math educators from around the world, Cara has accumulated a toolbox of proven strategies and ideas that enable her to reach and make a meaningful impact with a diverse group of learners.
Now based in Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, Cara is committed to helping students in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia succeed and develop their own lifelong passion for mathematics through her daily practice in the classroom and private tutoring. She also provides educator professional development programs for schools.
